Living Rooms You'll Love - Part 15

Canton Collections

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the blue-and-white Chinese export ware known as Canton, or ballast, was popular in the eastern United States. Here, it sees a revival as a classical anchor for the living room’s illustrious décor. All the pieces shown are Canton, with the exception the cup and china on the tilt-top table, which a re willowware.

Layering Texture

The soft gray-green tonality unifies the multilayered décor of this expansive living room. A chocolate velvet Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams wing chair, antique papier-mâché chair, and black-framed mirror ground the lighter colors. The painting by Oly, with its large scale and natural hues, helps anchor the wall opposite the fireplace.

Red and Gold Room

A bold mix of red and gold helps establish a distinctive palette in this room. Slipcoers, durable fabrics, and a woven cotton rug also make it kid- and pet-friendly, as well as easy to care for—important considerations for a room designed for family enjoyment. The woven shades are by Hunter Douglas and the sofa and ottoman are available through Lee Industries. The striped rug is from Dash & Albert.

Nantucket Room

Plentiful, comfortable seating around the fireplace in the living room encourages conversation and family time. The open plan welcomes entertaining with easy movement from room-to-room. Slipcovers, sisal carpets, wood floors, and washable walls of painted V-groove wood help to keep the space low-maintaince. Wicker seating and additional nautical touches—a model ship, candle lanterns on either side of the hearth and an anchor on the mantle—create a casual, Cape-style theme.
