Photo Gallery: Editors' Favourite Winter Paint Colours

Paint Pick: Blazer

A daring shade for a dark space.

"I'm obsessed with this orange-red shade these days," says design editor Joel Bray. "Although bright, it's a great winter shade because of the depth and warmth it adds to a wall. I would use Farrow & Ball's Blazer in a study or hallway that might not get a lot of natural light, and choose a matte finish for a velvety look."

Paint Pick: Railings

An almost-black grey.

"I'm in the process of finalizing a mantel design for the gas fireplace at our country house," explains senior design editor Margot Austin. "I want to make the fireplace look as much like a wood burning one as possible. I will do this by using a paintable faux-brick surround and a simple mantel, and then paint both in a deep charcoal grey to match the fireplace box frame, like Farrow & Ball's Railings. I think by minimizing contrast you will see the mantel shape first and not the gas insert. Then I'll light a Diptyque Feu de Bois candle and the the illusion will be complete!"

Paint Pick: Discreet Brown

A mature shade of pink.

"If I had a dressing room, I would paint the walls with Sico's soothing Discreet Brown and pair it with neutral furnishings," says H&H.com's web promotions editor Seema Persaud. "This pretty pink feels grown-up compared to others. For a contemporary look, try colour-blocking with a muted tone."
