Exposed-aggregate concrete, soaped timber and brick bear out Clare’s philosophy that building materials are beautiful things in themselves. Her penchant for ‘pure’ design extends to decorative pieces. In the living area, a bare-bulbed Jean Prouvé ‘Potence’ lamp celebrates industrial simplicity. Meanwhile, the custom-built banquette by Temperature Design follows the curving lines established by the architectural design.
The sinuous lines of the extension may be exceptionally beautiful but they are also functional. Peeling back from the northern boundary allowed more access to daylight and garden views.
Stained oak cabinets by Michael Schiavello and Euroa bricks create a dramatic kitchen, lifted with pale marble benches and Massproductions ‘Albert’ stools.
Owner and architect Clare Cousins revived her family's Edwardian house with a modern sculptural extension.
