DIY Faux-Antique Mirror

Transform basic mirror tiles into a full-length piece with patina.

Lay out mirror tiles on newspaper and spritz tiles with a water spray bottle, leaving droplets on the surface. Give each tile two light mists of a dark grey or black satin spray paint that has paint and primer in one. Let dry for a few minutes, then dab off the water with a paper towel. Once dry, glue the mirror tiles to the medium-density fibreboard (MDF) using mirror adhesive and let set overnight. (Note: You can also do this project with a framed mirror instead of tiles, but the water will pool over a larger area in the first step.)

Next, prep your frame. It has two parts: one that fits around the outside edge and one that fits over the outer edges of the mirror tiles to create an attractive finish. Spray-paint a length of 1/2" w. x 1/4" d. door-stop trim and a length of 2" w. x 1/4" d. moulding. Cut the door-stop trim to fit around the outside edge of the MDF, then attach to the MDF with finishing nails. Cut the moulding into an inner frame that will fit between the mirror and outer frame and cover any gaps. Attach each piece to the top of the mirror with multipurpose glue and let dry. When the frame is securely attached, flip the mirror over. Cut two 1" x 2-1/2" lengths of MDF slightly smaller than the mirror's height and attach each length to the back of the mirror with the multipurpose glue, about 12" in from the sides of the mirror. These supports will keep the mirror from buckling when it's standing upright.

DIY Star-Stenciled Floor

Revive tired wood flooring and inject detail into a room with a cottage-perfect paint treatment.

To begin, choose a star motif and draw it on tracing paper. Place the paper over a square of Mylar and use a utility knife to cut the shape out. Prep your floor with a hand sander to remove any old paint or finishes and create a surface the primer and paint will adhere to. Next, apply a coat of primer, let dry, then apply the colour (use glossy, oil or latex). Use two coats for a rich look. After letting the paint dry, begin stencilling. We placed the stars approximately 6" apart in relatively straight lines. Don't worry if the paint bleeds a bit--it will add to the charm.
TIP: Paint a thick white band around the area; it contains the pattern and helps deliver the effect of an area rug.

DIY Drink Trivets

Transform tiles into coasters for stylish dining indoors and out.

Place tiles on a sheet of felt and trace them with a pencil or chalk. Carefully cut the shapes out of the felt and glue them onto the back of the tile with white glue or a hot glue gun. Once the glue is dry, your tile-turned-trivet is ready to hold a cocktail! If you don't have leftover tile from a recent renovation, check out a local salvage store or flea market for remnant tile and have fun mixing and matching different ceramic styles.
